Hal Finney, Bitcoin pioneer who died in 2014 launches Running Bitcoin

Hal Finney is an icon in the Bitcoin community. If he’s not Satoshi Nakamoto, he most likely knows who this mysterious figure behind Bitcoin is. He died in 2014 at the age of 58 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a dangerous, little-known disease. This December 27, 2022, Hal Finney launched Running Bitcoin. This event will take place from January 01 to 10, 2023 and will raise money to fund research on the disease that struck him down in 2014…

Hal Finney is Satoshi or knows the creator of bitcoin

Before we talk about the Running Bitcoin event, it’s best to start by introducing its initiator.

Hal Finney is an American cypherpunk known for having received, on January 12, 2009, the very first Bitcoin transaction from Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious founder of Bitcoin. After the launch of the Bitcoin network, Hal Finney helped to improve it alongside Satoshi Nakamoto. Hal Finney was also the first person to talk about Bitcoin on Twitter.

Some people believe that the person behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto is … Hal Finney. Indeed, beyond Hal Finney’s work, his anti-system attitudes and his vision of a decentralized and free Internet make one think of Satoshi. Moreover, since Hal Finney’s death on August 28, 2014, Satoshi Nakamoto has not made any public communication. One thing is certain: if Hal Finney is not Satoshi Nakamoto, he knows who the mysterious creator of bitcoin is.

Hal Finney reappears on twitter and launches Running Bitcoin

Hal Finney‘s last communication on twitter before his death was on August 18, 2010. More than 12 years later, Hal Finney has reappeared on Twitter.

This is obviously not a ghost, but his wife who manages his Twitter account. Fran Finney claims to have taken this decision to prevent her husband’s Twitter account from being blocked. Indeed, Elon Musk’s new policy is to close all accounts that have been inactive for long enough.

In honor of Hal Finney’s passion for running and Bitcoin, his wife Fran Finney announced the launch of Running Bitcoin. This event was thought up by Hal Finney himself during his lifetime if we are to believe his tweet of January 11, 2009 shared by his wife.

No matter where you live, you can participate in this sporting and charitable event that will take place from January 1 to 10, 2023. All you have to do is run or walk a half-marathon distance (21 kilometers) and collect donations in Bitcoin to fund research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It is this disease in particular that had struck down Hal Finney in 2014.

In the Bitcoin Running, participants will choose the option that is favorable to them. The 21-kilometer walk or run can be done in one day or throughout the 10-day event. Contributions will be made in dollars or Bitcoin on a platform created for this purpose. Participants who make a minimum donation of $100 will receive the official Running Bitcoin Challenge 2023 shirt.

While the event has yet to start, it has already raised over $9,800 USD. This represents 20% of the expected $50,000. These funds will be donated to the ALS Association Golden West Chapter to fund critical care services, public policy initiatives, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research.

The announcement of the Running Bitcoin was met with great excitement by the Bitcoin community on Twitter. Not just because it was Hal Finney’s first tweet in 12 years, but mostly because of the good cause the project promotes. Donations have started to come in as the event was scheduled to begin on January 01, 2021. So it is expected that Running Bitcoin will be a success. Yes, the Bitcoin community owes it to Hal Finney for all he has done for the ecosystem. If you don’t want to miss anything about this project, follow Coinpri and above all: join our team!
