SEC favors dialogue and creates crypto working group
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced on January 21, 2025, the creation of a taskforce dedicated to digital assets, under the leadership of Commissioner Hester Peirce, nicknamed “Crypto Mom”.
This initiative marks a clear break with the repressive approach of the former president Gary Gensler. The group, which includes Richard Gabbert and Taylor Asher, aims to establish a clear and pragmatic regulatory framework for the crypto. It is working closely with the CFTC, now headed by Caroline Pham, as well as state and international regulators.
The goal of the working group will be to help the Commission draw clear regulatory lines, provide realistic pathways to registration, develop reasonable disclosure frameworks and judiciously deploy enforcement resources.
The SEC now favors dialogue with industry, organizing roundtables to understand regulatory challenges.
A paradigm shift under the Trump administration
The arrival of this task force coincides with the return of Donald Trump to the presidency, signaling a possible softening of the US regulatory stance. The administration’s initial actions, including the release of Ross Ulbricht, founder of Silk Road, are already showing a more favorable attitude towards the crypto ecosystem.
The legal environment is also evolving in the sector’s favor. A Texas court recently overturned sanctions against Tornado Cash. This victory for crypto privacy technologies could presage further positive developments under the new administration.
This reorientation of the SEC, combined with the Trump’s campaign promises regarding a potential Federal Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, suggests a brighter future for cryptocurrency innovation in the US.
