No medication, no vegan meals for SBF

This August 22, 2023, Sam Bankman-Fried was on the stand as part of the investigations into the collapse of FTX last year. No surprise there, the former boss of FTX pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud and money laundering.

This hearing was also an opportunity for his lawyers to denounce their client’s poor conditions of detention, which hampered his ability to prepare his defense.

According to the lawyer Mark Cohen, Sam Bankman-Fried is forced to observe a strict diet lacking a vegan option at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center. The former FTX CEO is forced to eat bread, water and peanut butter, he complains.

In addition to the strict restoration, it’s Sam Bankman-Fried‘s access to medication that’s also causing controversy. According to Mark Cohen, Sam Bankman-Fried hasn’t received any medication in prison since his return ten days ago. And yet, he fears, his drug supply is about to run out.

The court before which Sam Bankman-Fried is appearing has not remained insensitive to his lawyers’ denunciations. U.S. Federal Court Judge Sarah Netburn has declared that she will examine the treatment of this prisoner in greater detail.

It’s true that Sam Bankman-Fried’s actions have harmed several FTX users and debtors. But does this justify degrading treatment of the former FTX CEO in custody?
