China draws up an ambitious plan to catalyze the rise of the metaverse

Global technological advancement is intensifying, with increasing competition for digital supremacy. With this in mind, China is looking to harness the potential of the metaverse for its development.

According to Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China plans to implement an action plan to stimulate the development of the metaverse industry on its territory for a three-year period, from 2023 to 2025. This initiative, developed together with four other departments, is broken down into five major strategies, including :

  • The development of advanced technological systems to support the evolution of the metaverse ;
  • The design of an interactive industrial 3D metaverse;
  • The development of immersive digital user experiences;
  • The creation of solid infrastructures;
  • Establishing secure industrial governance.

By 2025, China aims to encourage the emergence of three to five industrial clusters based on these emerging technologies, covering a wide range of sectors, from automotive to aerospace to textiles.

China does not see the metaverse as a mere digital distraction or passing trend. It aspires to make it the foundation of its long-term technological advance, by setting rigorous standards and building a robust, mature and enduring ecosystem.

The world of the metaverse is increasingly becoming a priority for many entities seeking digital growth opportunities. Previously, the European Commission unveiled its strategic plan for 2030, affirming its ambition to become a world leader in Web 4.0 and the metaverse.
